Star Wars: 10 Things That Turned Jacen Solo Into Darth Caedus In Legends In Star Wars Legends, Jacen Solo became the powerful Sith Lord Darth Caedus. But what drove Han and Leia”s son to the Dark Side of the Force?
The Star Wars Expanded Universe was an opportunity for authors to go far beyond the initial trilogy, and weave new stories and lore into the canon. Unfortunately, it was all thrown out the window when Disney purchased the property in 2012 and set about with their own vision, which turned out to lukewarm audience reception.

Now called Legends, this alternative content produced two of the most famous characters – Jacen and Jaina Solo, the children of Han and Leia. The former would play a huge role in galactic events, first as a benevolent Jedi Knight, and later, a ruthless Sith Lord known as Darth Caedus. How did Jacen make this spectacular from grace? Here”s ten key events that pushed him down that path.
Jacen and Jaina weren”t born into a perfect galaxy. As the children of Han Solo and Leia Organa, both were targets for unscrupulous individuals of all kinds. Even before they were born, the Imperial Remnant came under the control of Grand Admiral Thrawn, who immediately took interest in the children, and promised them to the mad clone Joruus C”baoth in exchange for his services as a dark Jedi.
Next, the resurrected Emperor Palpatine made a go for the children, including Leia and Han”s third child Anakin. This, combined with Luke Skywalker”s fear that prolonged exposure to the dark side could have permanent effects, may have contributed to some of the turmoil that would eventually resurface in Jacen”s adult life.
Jacen and Jaina had almost nobody to rely on except each other during their early years, due mainly to their prominence which dictated strict security measures. As such, both found it difficult to cope in comparison to regular children who were learning how to socialize and create bonds.
The twins had a bond of their own, and although it would serve them greatly in the coming years, it wasn”t the same as having a close roster of friends with different opinions and likes to draw from. This detachment from a social circle would be hard on any child, and doubly so for one adept in the Force.
At one point, Jacen and Jaina were abducted by Nightsister Tamith Kai of the planet Dathomir, also home to past Sith Lord Darth Maul. Under the tutelage of Luke Skywalker”s failed student Brakiss, the two were pushed to give in to the dark side of the Force and embrace anger and hatred as motivators.
Brakiss inflicted a number of torments on the children, including forcing them to square off against one another, unbeknownst. It was also a time of great temptation, for Brakiss had given Jacen his first lightsaber, which he had secretly coveted. He would later reject the weapon, but the mark of the incident still weighed heavy on him.
7 Guilt Over Tenel Ka Djo
The young woman known as Tenel Ka Djo would pop up several times during Jacen”s life, notably when the two trained together at Luke Skywalker”s Jedi Praxeum. There, she dueled Jacen in practice using a lightsaber of shoddy construction, which led to disaster and long-lasting ramifications for Solo.

Her lightsaber failed in mid-training, and Jacen”s saber severed her arm clean off. It was never reattached, and that led to a major blow to Jacen”s confidence. He also held romantic feelings for Ka Djo, which would strain their relationship deeply. The guilt over this accident may have struck at Jacen more deeply than he realized.
The first signs of Jacen”s eventual downfall came early into his apprenticeship under Luke Skywalker. Almost from the start, Jacen clashed with his Uncle as to the nature of the Force, and the role the Jedi should play in Galactic affairs. This eventually spilled over into his relationship with his younger brother Anakin.
While Anakin believed that the Jedi should act as peacekeepers in galactic affairs, as per tradition, Jacen believed that internal understanding of the Force was the true path. Rather than simply agree to disagree, Jacen attempted to make his argument the dominant one, remaining stubborn in his own defiance.
5 Second-Guessing The Jedi Order
Following the first initial battles with the Yuuzhan Vong preliminary invasion fleet, Jacen Solo began calling into doubt the nature of the Jedi Order, and his role within it. He believed that the Order had fallen away from its original role in galactic affairs; a sentiment he harbored before but was now growing.
He expressed his desire to leave the Order entirely, citing his desire to gain a spiritual understanding of the Force, without the distractions of galactic affairs. Luke Skywalker belayed his request due to the imminent threat of the Yuuzhan Vong, who could not be felt through the Force.
After excusing himself from Jedi duties and cutting himself off from galactic events during the Vong invasion, Jacen experienced an overwhelming pain projected from his twin sister Jaina, which gave way to an ominous Force vision that caused him to second-guess himself yet again.
In the vision, Luke Skywalker battled a Yuuzhan Vong warrior, only to throw his lightsaber to Jacen. However, Jacen was unable to grab the lightsaber and spiraled into an imbalance of darkness symbolized in the vision. This would act as foreshadowing for events yet to come.
3 Anakin”s Death Affected Him Greatly
For years, Jacen”s relationship with Anakin had gone from close, to antagonistic, and back again. Their ideological clashes regarding the nature of the Force and the Jedi Order was well-known, and the two even squared off in a lightsaber battle to settle the argument, to no avail.
Their love for one another never ceased, until the day Anakin died on a mission to destroy the Voxyn Queen, a creature used by the Yuuzhan Vong to hunt Jedi. Already conflicted over his role in events during the war, Jacen took Anakin”s death extremely hard, and the next events would not help matters much.
Following Anakin”s death, Jacen was captured by the Yuuzhan Vong and subjected to a series of physical and mental tortures meant to “shape” him. It was during this time that the mysterious Vergere played a more prominent role in what would be his future Force training. Her manipulations ended up teaching Jacen a number of lessons, both good and bad, light and dark.

During his time with the Vong, Jacen succumbed to anger, rage, and hatred several times, though the incidents in question were morally grey. While this did provide him with some enlightenment of a higher understanding of the Force, it also spoke a truth Master Yoda once said about starting down the dark path, and the disaster that would follow.
1 Lumiya”s Influence On The Young Jedi
The final tipping point towards Jacen”s fall came when he was accosted by the Dark Lady Lumiya, a Sith practitioner who insisted that the dark side of the Force could be embraced without falling into evil. She cited the life of former Sith Lord Darth Vectivus, a man whose interest in Sith ideology was academic, at best.
Lumiya managed to convince Jacen that he could wield the dark side without falling victim to evil. This allowed him to justify a string of atrocities that began with the slaying of Nelani Dinn, one of his padawans who realized he was falling into darkness. From that moment, Jacen permanently changed, and would soon become Darth Caedus. With Lumiya”s tempered guidance, Jacen fell further and further into vanity and evil, which consumed him.
