Briggs and Stratton Intek V-Twin 22 HP connecting rods blown Just pull apart my Briggs and Stratton Intek V-Twin 22 HP and both connecting rods blew, looks like they disintegrated. The cam shaft looks good and the crank journals look ok. How do you determine if it is worth rebuilding? The date code on the engine is 041227YG. Any Ideas?
IF the circumstances are as you describe, I would rebuild it. Connecting rods do not “disintegrate” for no reason. Determining why that happened would be my first priority. Both connecting rods and no damage to crankshaft, very unusual. Connecting rods about $40 ea. and gasket set in that range. Rings about that amount each set also. Cylinder wall wear would be second thing to consider. Walt Conner
Wow, a bit of forensic investigation is warranted. So many questions arise, as Walt has said. It might be rebuildable, but carefully figure out the cause and the effects.
Well I take it back, I removed the crank and it looks like my comments before where wish full thinking. See the pictures looks like it took a pretty good hit. Also the skirt on one piston is broken. Doesn”t look good for a rebuild, what do you guys think. Also I think I found out what happened. The extension pipe for the oil drain was very loose where it screws into the engine. As I was taking the engine out I noticed oil in the bottom of the machine and in the pulley for the deck belt. I am thinking the oil leaked out the loose fitting without my notice and cook the engine. Anyone heard of that happening.?
I don”t think I”ve ever seen one snap even one rod let alone both without lots of crank damage due to being run low on oil.Many people have good luck using muriatic acid to clean off the aluminum on the crank.
From the pictures it looks to me like that crank would clean up just fine. Use some muriatic acid to melt off the aluminum and then maybe polish it with some fairy fine grit sandpaper six hundred or thousand.These things are quite forgiving except in low oil instances. It”s not like they have bearing inserts. They just rely on loose clearances and a cushion of oil. So as long as you smooth it out and don”t have any big grooves that will catch your fingernail extremely, it will be just fine. You can probably find a used piston that someone will almost give you as many of these engines blow up and it”s not worth fixing them. For the price of two rods a base gasket and a piston you should be back in business sounds like. That”s fairly cost-effective as long as you”re doing the work yourself. A good used running one in this area goes for at least $200 if not 250-plus.
