When we think of child stars, we think of cute, little, charming and sassy actors. We don’t really ever think of them as becoming “grownups.” They are just supposed to stay frozen as those perfect little people their whole lives.
As many of our all-time favorite child stars are quickly hitting their 30’s and 40’s, we know that wonderful ideal is definitely not the typical circumstance.
Most of the human population is considered adorable when they are children. It’s that awful middle stage that transforms us into the creatures we become as adults. As special as child stars are, they are still human and cannot escape the dreaded evolution into adulthood.
From Matilda and The Little Rascals to Full House and Malcom in the Middle, we have been so lucky in the child star department. But most of those beloved little stars have become totally unrecognizable.

20 Mara Wilson Has Come A Long Way From Matilda
Mara Wilson will forever be known as Matilda. Despite starring in several great films during the nineties, Matilda was arguably Mara’s greatest performance.
These days, Mara Wilson is all grown up and her once charming features have all but faded into the woman she is today. Mara is actually still an actress today. She chooses to stick to voice acting, though.
19 Josh Peck Is The Definition Of Glow-Up
When you think of “glow-up,” you need to think of Josh Peck. When Josh first got his big break, on Nickelodeon’s “The Amanda Show” and then “Drake & Josh,” he was the chunky and funny teenager.
As Josh has matured into an adult, he literally morphed into this fit and hunky star right before our eyes.
18 Macaulay Culkin Has Been Home Alone A Long Time
Macaulay Culkin was just 10-years-old when he starred in his breakout role in Home Alone. He ruled the child star game in the nineties. But now he is 39-years-old.
Obviously, Macaulay is going to look drastically different from his 10-year-old self, but this is next level different. Macaulay had a difficult transition from child star to adult star, but he’s making it work now.
If you look deep into those eyes, you can still see remnants of the Haley Joel Osment we all know and love from his child star days. But other than that, Haley Joel Osment is nearly unrecognizable.
The charming actor had quite a career even before his most notable role in The Sixth Sense and has kept a steady line of smaller roles going ever since.
16 Abigail Breslin Is A Lot More Than Little Miss Sunshine Now
She won our hearts over as Bo in Signs and then all over again as Olive in Little Miss Sunshine. Since she pretty much grew up in front of a camera, all of Abigail Breslin’s awkward stages are documented on film forever.
We are happy to see Abigail becoming her own woman and getting those big acting roles again.
Daryl Sabara is the epitome of a lot of millennial’s childhoods. He is the face of Spy Kids, which was a totally awesome trilogy. Little Junie is all grown up now and married to singer, Meghan Trainor.
Daryl has continued acting but sticks to roles on television and as a voice actor.
14 Blake McIver Ewing Was Once Everyone’s Childhood Crush
Oh, Blake McIver Ewing; take my heart but please don’t break it.
Blake was that girl-stealing, rich boy, Waldo, from Little Rascals, that we all loved anyway. He also played Michelle’s school mate, Derek, on Full House. Since he’s grown up though, Blake hasn’t been taking on many acting roles, but he’s still pretty handsome.
Jonathan Lipnicki is most known for his roles as a child star, despite still having a pretty substantial acting career as an adult.
He was the adorable little boy, with oversized glasses, who taught us that the human head weighs eight pounds in Jerry McGuire, and a mouse’s big brother, in Stuart Little. Now, 29-years-old, Jonathan no longer looks like his child star self.
12 Susan Olsen Used To Be The Youngest Brady Of The Bunch
Susan Olsen is best known for her role as the youngest of the Brady Bunch, Cindy. She has literally played Cindy Brady for the majority of her acting career.
With a role as cute and popular as that one, it’s kind of hard to shed that image, even after becoming an adult.
She might not have her adorable curly hair anymore, but Mackenzie Rosman will always be remembered as Ruthie Camden in 7th Heaven. She did play the role for more than a decade of her young life.
Mackenzie hasn’t had any huge roles since 7th Heaven. From the looks of her social media account, she likes to spend her time outdoors and riding horses now.
10 Jaleel White Doesn’t Look Like Urkel These Days
Remember that annoying presence on Family Matters? Yeah, this is him. Jaleel White spent much of his child star days playing the suspender-wearing, big glasses Steve Urkel who we couldn’t help but love.
Jaleel was actually able to break out of his stereotyped role and has continued landing acting roles ever since.
Taylor Momsen got her big break as the sweetest little girl to ever grace a movie screen. She was Cindy Lou Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. She likely knew that she’d have to fight to get people to see her as anything else.
After starring as Dan Humphrey’s little sis on Gossip Girl, Taylor chooses to let her music take first priority now.
8 Frankie Muniz Has Us Wishing For A Malcolm In The Middle Reunion
Frankie Muniz is Malcolm in the Middle. Yes, he’s also Agent Cody Banks, but he’s definitely still Malcolm… just all grown up now.
Those awkward middle years hit Frankie pretty hard, but he appears to have gotten a hang of this adult thing. These days, Frankie is doing a lot of hosting and broadcast roles.
Michael Fishman has always been, and probably always will be, DJ Conner. Since Roseanne made its comeback last year, that means Michael has played the adorably quirky youngest Conner kid for 20 years now!
Of course, now he’s on The Conners, but he’s still playing DJ, even if he doesn’t look like he did in the 90s.
6 Ralph Macchio Doesn”t Look Like The Karate Kid Anymore
Ralph Macchio was easily one of the most recognizable faces of the 80s after landing both the role of Johnny in The Outsiders and Daniel in The Karate Kid.
Even though he has reprised his Karate Kid role over the last year, in the television show Cobra Kai, Ralph isn’t as recognizable as he once was.
When you think Lindsay Lohan, sadly, you likely think about her rough and wild time growing up. But once upon a time, Lindsay was a cute child star playing two roles in Parent Trap.
Looking at her from then to now, she is totally unrecognizable and almost a completely different person.
4 Devon Sawa Will Always Be A Nineties Heartthrob
We loved him in Casper. We’ve loved him in Now and Then, and we even likely loved him in Eminem’s music video for “Stan.” There really isn’t a role we didn’t love Devon Sawa in.
Although he doesn’t look like he did back in 90s, he is now the adult version of a hunky heartthrob. He has grown up right alongside his fans.
It’s tough being the youngest boy in a dysfunctional family like the one in Malcolm in the Middle. Erik Per Sullivan got his acting chops wet by playing the dim-witted Dewey for six years on the series.
He’s 28-years-old now, though, and hasn’t had any major acting roles since the comedy series ended in 2006.
2 Steven Anthony Lawrence Is Totally Unrecognizable From His Even Stevens Days
Steven Anthony Lawrence is most recognized from his time as Beans on Even Stevens or as the neighbor boy on Cheaper by the Dozen. He had some unique features that made him a one-of-a-kind child star.
However, those same features didn’t transfer as well in his adult life. The 29-year-old actor is slowly making appearances back on the small screen.
Bug Hall’s first and most notable role was playing Alfalfa in The Little Rascals. His pointy hair, freckles, and wiggly ears have a special spot in our hearts.
Bug did have a few other great child star roles, but nothing really could compare to Alfalfa. He continues acting to this day, but in smaller, guest star television roles.
